To find the right DJ, keep these guidelines in mind.
- The lowest price isn't always the best deal.
This is especially true if you are planning a wedding. In hindsight, nearly
100% of brides said that they should have spent more money on their entertainment and
should have made it their #1 priority, according to consumer survey statistics reported by the American Disc Jockey
Association.

- Be wary of companies that subcontract.
Some companies will charge big prices and then hire a smaller and less
professional company, so that they can reap the profits without doing the
work. When looking for a DJ, make sure that the people in the company will
be the people actually working at your function.
- Beware of flashy DJ's.
Some DJ companies offer fancy light shows and hand out party props
during your function. For birthday parties, Bar or Bat Mitzvah
parties, and similar events, this is totally acceptable. However,
when dealing with Wedding or Anniversary parties, the focus should
be infinitely more on the bride and groom or guest(s) of honor
than on the entertainment.
- Ask about workers in attendance.
Some companies will bring one or more family members or friends to your
function and ask you to provide a meal for them. This is fine, if these
people are performing a task for the company (for example, assistant
photographer or tech support DJ's); otherwise, these people are just
uninvited guests. Professional companies usually will not do this.
- Ask about attire.
DJ's should arrive in attire that's professional yet appropriate for your
function. If it's a casual affair, that means a casual shirt, either polo
or button-down, and khakis or black pants; if it's a semi-formal or formal
function, DJ's should have black pants, a tuxedo or dress shirt, dress
shoes, and appropriate accessories, like a vest or jacket and tie. You
would not want someone coming to your event in a t-shirt and jeans.
- Remember: this is your special event!
The most important thing to remember when looking for a DJ is that he or she
is there to keep you and your guests happy, entertained, and stress-free. This
means following every detail to the letter and accomodating your needs to the
best of his or her abilities. Review all details in advance; make sure the music
selection includes enough of what you and your guests will enjoy; make sure your
DJ understands that his or her job is to keep the focus on the guest(s) of honor. The
more attention a DJ pays to your needs, the more people will notice. A professional
will already know this.
